Cupping: what the round marks are and how long they stay

4 September 2026 · Ligia Possu

The marks come from the suction of the cup, not from a knock. Here is why they appear, why they are darker on some people, how long they usually last, and when it is better not to have the session.

If you are here on holiday, this is usually the practical question behind it: will there be round purple circles on my back in the beach photos for the next week. The honest answer is yes, most likely, and they fade in 3 a 7 days on average.

Why the mark appears, and why it is not an ordinary bruise

A bruise from a knock comes from an impact that breaks vessels from the outside in. With cupping it is the other way round: the cup creates a vacuum over the skin and draws blood and fluid up to the surface at that point. In Chinese medicine, which guides my work, the technique is used to move circulation in regions where tension has collected. The mark that stays is that reaching the surface.

Why the mark is darker on some people

The colour and the intensity vary from person to person, and from one region to another on the same body. Points with more accumulated tension tend to mark more strongly; the same cup, on a point without tension, can leave almost nothing. Paler skin also makes the mark more visible, without that meaning anything went wrong in the session.

How long the mark lasts

3 a 7 days on average, depending on how sensitive your skin is. They fade gradually, day after day, until they are gone; darker marks usually take longer than light ones. If you have a wedding, a shoot or a beach day coming up, tell me before we book and we can plan around it.

Does it hurt?

During the session what you feel is the suction — a pressure pulling the skin, not a sharp pain. Some people notice mild discomfort as the cup is placed or removed, especially on more sensitive points. If the pressure is too strong, tell me during the session and I adjust it.

When not to do it

I do not use cups on anyone with a clotting disorder, on anticoagulants, with thrombosis or thrombophlebitis, over raised varicose veins at that spot, with a fever, with an infection, over an open wound or over very fragile skin. If any of that applies to you, tell me before booking and we decide together whether the session makes sense or whether we switch to another technique.

How to book cupping

Cupping goes inside a therapeutic massage session, in the same appointment, with travel included in the price. On its own I do not do it.

You message me on WhatsApp, tell me what is bothering you, and I bring the table to you in the Zona Sul, Barra, Recreio, Centro or Tijuca. The cupping page has more detail on the technique itself.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What people ask about cupping marks

Are cupping marks bruises?

Not in the same way as a bruise from a knock. The mark comes from the suction of the cup, which draws blood and fluid to the surface of the skin. It is the expected result of the technique.

How long do the marks take to fade?

3 a 7 days on average, depending on the person and the region of the body. They fade gradually, day after day.

Does cupping hurt?

What you feel is the suction, a pressure pulling the skin, not a sharp pain. There can be mild discomfort as the cup is placed or removed. If the pressure is strong, tell me during the session.

Who should not have cupping?

I do not use cups on anyone with a clotting disorder, on anticoagulants, with thrombosis or thrombophlebitis, over raised varicose veins at that spot, with a fever, with an infection, over an open wound or over very fragile skin. Tell me before booking and we decide together whether the session makes sense or whether we adjust to another technique.

Can I book cupping on its own, without the therapeutic massage?

No. Cupping always goes inside another massage. With the therapeutic massage that is 75 minutes for R$ 300, travel included.

Tell me the address and the day. I bring the rest.

Same-day reply. No sign-up, no app.
