Back pain from sitting all day: what massage fixes and what it does not

4 September 2026 · Ligia Possu

The pain that shows up after hours in a chair has a mechanical cause. Massage eases the effect. It does not change the cause.

Qualified in Physiomassage Therapy, 2024 · I work in English, Portuguese and Spanish · The person at the door is always me.

If you spend the day sitting — laptop, meetings, then traffic sitting again — the pattern is usually the same: a locked neck, tension between the shoulder blades, a stiff lower back when you stand up. That is not in your head. It is the body holding the same posture for too long, without a break. People working remotely from Rio for a few weeks tend to notice it faster, because the desk is a kitchen table and the chair was never meant for eight hours.

What massage really eases

I work the muscle and the fascia that tightened from the repeated posture. That reduces muscular pain, releases the point that keeps locking in the same place, and helps the body come down after a day of accumulated tension. I work with prevention in mind: going back to the same point regularly, not only once the pain is already loud.

In practice that usually means less stiffness at the end of the day, and a point that starts hurting later than it used to. The relief is real and it repeats with each session.

What it does not do

Massage does not replace a better chair. It does not replace the break you did not take, or the five minutes on your feet every hour that your body is asking for. And it does not correct a structural cause, if there is one — a disc problem, an old postural change, an injury. That is diagnosis and clinical treatment, and it is not what I do.

If the pain comes back every week in exactly the same way, the problem is probably in the routine — the chair, the screen height, the hours without standing up — not in a session you missed. Massage eases the symptom. What changes the cause is whoever changes the routine.

When it is time for a doctor, not a massage

Some signs call for a medical assessment before any massage:

  • Pain that travels down the leg, beyond the back
  • Tingling or numbness anywhere
  • Loss of strength — trouble gripping something or putting weight on a foot
  • Pain that wakes you at night, even lying still

In those cases see a doctor first. Massage therapy does not treat illness and does not replace a clinical assessment. If one of those signs appears, it comes before the massage, not after it.

What I offer for this kind of pain

For a neck and back that lock at the same point, I use myofascial release, which works one specific area and brings a relaxing part with it: 75 minutes, R$ 300, travel included. For tension spread more widely across the back, deep tissue, with firmer pressure, 60 minutes for R$ 300.

If you also want to work on mobility rather than just relief, therapeutic stretching comes as a 30 minute add-on inside one of those sessions.

I come to Barra da Tijuca, Joá, Itanhangá, Freguesia, Recreio, Zona Sul, Centro, Tijuca, Grajaú and Maracanã, 9am to 8pm. Travel is included in the price — the Uber is on me.

COMMON QUESTIONS

About back pain and massage

Does massage fix back pain for good?

Not on its own. It eases the tension that builds through the day, but the cause stays the same: the chair, the posture, the hours without standing up. Without changing that, the pain returns.

When should I see a doctor instead of booking a massage?

If the pain travels down the leg, if there is tingling or loss of strength, or if it hurts even lying still at night, see a doctor first. Massage therapy does not replace a medical assessment in those cases.

Does massage replace physiotherapy?

No. Physiotherapy treats a specific cause with a clinical plan. I work on muscular relief and prevention, not on diagnosing or treating an injury.

Which session suits someone who sits all day?

It depends where the tension collects. For neck and shoulders locked at one fixed point, myofascial release works that area with a relaxing part included: 75 minutes, R$ 300. For tension spread across the back, deep tissue, with firmer pressure, 60 minutes for R$ 300.
